Imported Paper Tariff
A growing threat against the local paper industry may be slowed, thanks to a preliminary tariff on paper imported from China and Indonesia.  The ruling from the U.S. Department of Commerce was made following a petition by members of the U.S. paper industry asking that duties be imposed to offset Chinese and Indonesian government subsidization and dumping of coated paper products.  Congressman Bart Stupak from Menominee says U.S. trade laws must be enforced to prevent closures like the one at the Niagara, WI paper mill.  The preliminary tariff could become permanent this fall when the Department of Commerce makes its final determination.
